pre-interviews to storytellers
- Oregon Food Bank wanted Oregonians to see hunger as the result of systems and policy. Research showed the audience already supported food access, had not yet connected it to hunger, and responded to real stories more than advocacy.
- The campaign aimed at rural Oregon. We studied who lives in each region, what they do for work, and what money looks like for them: over 730,000 people across the target areas.
- Four archetypes guided casting: people growing and catching our food, people caring for others for a living, people living off the tourist economy, and people keeping small towns running.
Seth Godin lens
Smallest viable market
Four groups of workers, each with a shared identity and a real place. People like us do things like this became the casting brief.
Michael Margolis lens
Context
Every story is tied to a real place, so the audience recognizes the circumstances as their own.
- The core idea: hunger comes from real economic pressure like housing costs, wages and policy. Stories come from real experience, so people feel connected. The goal points to what needs to change.
- Twenty pre-interviews led to four storytellers. Each narrative was shaped around the client's messaging and goals.
Seth Godin lens
The marketing promise
The campaign promise names who it serves and what changes: people who see themselves in a story are ready to see the system behind it.
Michael Margolis lens
The undeniable story
People see it and feel it before they believe it. Each film shows a life first, then lets the point arrive.
- Storytellers were filmed with documentary interview techniques that draw out honest, unscripted answers.
- Four two-minute films came from the interviews, and a photographer shot stills for the static ads.
Seth Godin lens
Tension
Each film holds the gap between doing everything right and still going hungry.
Michael Margolis lens
Emotion
Honest answers and real voices carry the feeling that moves people.
- Interviews were transcribed. A copywriter pulled quotes and questions, and a designer combined photos and copy into static ads.
- Each two-minute film was cut into :30 and :15 ads for paid media, in English and Spanish.
- An in-depth process presentation documents the method.
Seth Godin lens
Permission
One story fed many formats, so the audience met the message again and again in the places they already spend time.
Michael Margolis lens
An unfolding journey
The campaign invites people deeper: a short ad, then the full film, then the conversation.
- 4.8M impressions.
- 60,000+ new people brought into the conversation.
Seth Godin lens
Direct marketing
Reach and new audience are counted, so the next campaign starts from known numbers.
Michael Margolis lens
Evidence
The numbers complete the story: the message reached beyond the organization's existing base.

- The pattern shows what a Campaign package organizes: one message in several formats for one finish line.
